Put safety first. Stay off the roof. Wet or damaged roofs are slippery and can be unstable. Watch for downed power lines, broken glass and hanging limbs. If water is coming through a ceiling, move belongings away and shut off power to that area if it is safe to do so.
Take photos. Use your phone to photograph what you can see from the ground: shingles in the yard, dented gutters, damaged siding, broken windows and any hail you can find, ideally next to a coin or ruler for scale. Inside, photograph water stains, drips and wet insulation. Note the date and time of the storm.
